IB Programs
The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers a continuum of education through challenging, high-quality programs to students aged 3 to 19. West High School offers three of them: the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), and the Career-related Programme (CP).
IB programs encourage both personal development and academic achievement challenging students to think critically, to ask the right questions, and think across disciplines. An IB education also fosters diversity, curiosity, and zeal for learning. Schools must be authorized to offer IB curricula. Every school authorized to offer IB programs is known as an IB World School. West is one of over 5,900 IB World Schools, and one of only 29 in Tennessee.

West High School offers “IB for All!”
Every student at West has the opportunity to be part of its IB community. All 9th and 10th graders are part of the MYP. As 11th and 12th graders, students may participate in IB in one of three ways: by making a two-year commitment to the DP or CP, or by taking any IB subjects offered.
Our Mission
The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

IB Programs

Dr. Shari Valencic
IB Coordinator
Shari Valencic, or “Dr. V.” as she is best known to students, has over a decade of experience in International Baccalaureate (IB) programs in Florida and Tennessee. Dr. V. began teaching IB Psychology at both the SL and HL levels in 2017 and was a core faculty member of Southwest Florida’s Venice High School IB Diploma Programme (DP) for eight years, serving as a Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) Advisor, Extended Essay (EE) Supervisor, and IB Student Board of Directors (IBSBOD) founding sponsor during her time there. Upon retiring from Sarasota County Schools after 34 years as a gifted education teacher and professional development trainer, Dr. V. and her husband Tim relocated to (what they believed was) hurricane-free Tennessee to be closer to the majority of their family. When West’s IB DP and Career-related Programme Coordinator position became available, Dr. V. decided it was a fortuitous “victory lap” opportunity. Dr. V. also serves on the steering committee for Tennessee’s IB Association (TIBA) of schools.
Dr. V. is originally from Cleveland and continues to vacation several times annually on her beloved Catawba Island off of Ohio’s north coast. She attended the University of Notre Dame and holds degrees in education from Southern Connecticut State, Nova, and Argosy Universities. She has two fabulous adult daughters and a fat tabby cat. Dr. V. has only been a Tennessean since July, 2024, when she moved to Lenoir City’s lake district after living in Venice, Florida for 43 years. Dr. V. is an avid (mostly solo) road-tripper, 80s music fan, and collector of shells, fossils, sea glass, and other shoreline treasures.
